Public Relation Officer Grade 5

The Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA) invites applications from suitably qualified, highly motivated and well experienced persons of Malawi origin to fill management positions tenable at the Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority Head Office in Lilongwe. 

THE ORGANISATION

The Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority is a body corporate created by an Act of Parliament Number 9 of 2019 with the mandate to regulate medicines and allied substances, pharmaceutical businesses and pharmacy personnel and pharmacy training institutions in Malawi.

DETAILS OF THE POSITIONS

The details of the vacant positions are as follows:

  • JOB PURPOSE
    Reporting to the Director General, the incumbent shall be responsible for building public support for PMRA services and operations by providing the public and stakeholders with up-to-date, correct and realistic information in general, and specifically to plan and implement communication activities for building consensus between PMRA and the general public, and evaluating their effectiveness.
    MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    i. Develop and implement communication strategies for the PMRA
    ii. Advise management on communication issues and strategies
    iii. Conduct research on public opinion about PMRA and implement awareness campaign programmes
    iv. Present information on behalf of PMRA to stakeholders and respond to enquiries from the public, and other organisations;
    v. Develop and arrange production of newsletters, press releases, notices, in-house magazines, information and educational communication materials, pamphlets and brochures;
    vi. Oversee production of visual (film or video) and audio electronic material, including uploading news items on to the PMRA website
    vii. Organize special events such as open days, visits, exhibitions and functions, and monitor their effectiveness
    viii. Serve as the Authority’s spokesperson and effectively manage media relations.
    ix. Continually monitor and analyse all groundbreaking news items relating to the pharmaceutical industry both on the local and international scene
    x. Conduct internal communication courses, workshops and media training
    xi. Liaise with the media i.e. respond to inquiries, arrange interviews with journalists, prepare and distribute news releases and make statements.

REQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The holder of the position is expected to have the following minimum key qualifications:
i. Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Mass Communications
ii. At least 5 years’ experience in a busy Corporate Communications role
iii. Excellent interpersonal, communication, research and ICT skills.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
i. An effective team player with a desire to understand Authority’s mandate and strategic plans.
ii. Must possess expertise in message development and materials production, design and formatting.
iii. Must have experience in editing corporate documents and news items and have the ability to develop press releases and notices.
iv. Conscientious, thorough, systematic person with a high level of integrity.
v. Open minded, diplomatic person with excellent communication (both written and oral) as well as interpersonal skills, and able to assimilate information quickly and accurately.
vi. Must be proficient in standard computer applications such as MS Office and in social media.
vii. Must be a self-starter, creative, a problem solver, and assertive.
viii. Familiarity with project management software and video/photo editing is a plus.
ix. Excellent organizational skills.
x. Must demonstrate knowledge of the pharmaceutical sector/industry in Malawi
